Why is it important?

Stroke has a huge impact on individuals and families; it is described as a ‘most dreadful visitation'. It can dramatically change an individual's function, role and lifestyle from one day to the next. Stroke is associated with high levels of anxiety and depression.

Many stroke survivors require help in daily activities. This often requires carers or even placement in a care home.

Stroke is preventable – good control of blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and stopping smoking can reduce stroke incidence.
