Aims and Objectives



This module will support students to develop an understanding of the role of a mentor and practice the key skills needed to be effective in this role. This module will particularly focus upon a wide range of communication skills and reflection techniques, particularly:

  • Goal Setting
  • Action planning
  • Questioning skills
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Active listening
  • Dealing with difficult situations
  • Personal reflection techniques

This module is designed to:

  • Assist mentors and mentees to feel a greater sense of belonging to the University and the local community as well as enhancing their general sense of well-being and social contact.
  • Create a peer support framework where experience and knowledge is shared across a range of contexts.
  • Help students understand how the skills and attributes developed and acquired will contribute towards employability and effective preparation for the workplace – in particular the transition process into work and continuous personal and professional development.
